The idea for SignScouter came from my dad.
My parents agree on many things and have a very happy marriage, but the amount of time one should spend looking at information boards/signs/plaques/{insert_chosen_word} is not something they've ever settled on.
When I was visiting recently, he let me know that he'd dreamt up an app, The Boards of East Lothian, which would have photos of every board so that he could peruse the boards and their stories from his sofa.
I immediately thought the idea had legs, and could likely extend way beyond East Lothian.
The more I thought about it, I knew there had to be people other than my dad and I who'd be interested in finding out more about the hidden and not-so-hidden parts of the UK through the medium of the boards that we see all over the place.
I also knew there'd be potential obssessives (no pejorative intended) who'd love to contribute by scouting out and logging the signs that just sit there not being looked at for most of their time bolted to the earth.
So, this is somewhat of experiment.
How hard can it be to build a community of readers and contributors, perusers and archivists, sign readers and SignScouters?
I guess we'll find out - and hopefully find out a lot more about the world we live in at the same time.
